My two favorite things about being a family medicine physician are developing long-term relationships with patients and being able to take care of multiple members of the same family. I love connecting with my patients and hearing their stories, challenges and experiences. I hope that when my patients leave the office, they not only feel confident about the plan we developed for their health & wellness, but they are also surprised at how much they laughed and enjoyed our visit.

I’ve had my own experiences being a patient—my first significant experience in the healthcare system was as a patient one summer during my college years. Just after returning from a mission trip to Peru, I developed 104 degree fevers, bloody vomit and severe body aches which led me to being hospitalized. I experienced fear and anxiety about what was going to happen to me as the first 5 days passed after lots of tests without a diagnosis. Finally on the 6th day, I was diagnosed with Typhoid Fever, and the treatment strategy was determined. Most of my doctors and nurses had never seen someone with typhoid fever before. Many residents and healthcare students rounded on me to learn about my condition. I made a full recovery after being discharged from the hospital.

Two years later, I was able to spend the summer months working with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India. At the time, I was a theology major trying to decide on whether I should enter the priesthood or pursue a career in medicine. I was a humbled witness to the suffering and injustices of the lonely, the wounded, the destitute and sometimes also the dying in Mother’s homes. I did not have the resources or knowledge to offer more than my presence and companionship to many I was able to serve. Mother’s sisters taught all of us volunteers to be Jesus’ Hands and Feet to those in need. After this experience, I knew I was called to pursue a career in medicine.

My family is happy to call San Antonio TX home. I am blessed by my wife and two young daughters. It is my honor to serve the medical needs of my patients, many of whom I consider good friends.
